Soils and Pulses

Managing soils for sustainable pulse production

Pulses are good for food, health and wealth. Pulses also boost soil fertility and sustainability of cropping systems and contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation by improving soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation and counterbalance the increase greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission. Efficient management of soils can enhance pulse production which can help reduce the need for industrial nitrogen fertilizers, improve food security and soil health. The Soil and Water Management and Crop Nutrition (SWMCN) Subprogramme in the AGE Division through Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) and Technical Cooperation projects (TCPs) assists Member Countries to identify pulses with high nitrogen fixing abilities. On the occasion of the 2016 International Year of Pulses, this Brochure focuses on strategies for improving soil conditions (managing abiotic stresses) to optimize the productivity of pulses.
